Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) and Therapy

Therapy (OMT)

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is used to establish (or re-establish) normal oral rest postures and muscle functions of the mouth. Myofunctional therapy occurs as a part of a collaborative team to improve the patient’s quality of life. Treatment goals may include: eliminate any harmful sucking habit (thumb-sucking/pacifier/prolonged use of sippy cups), establish nasal breathing patterns, normalizing tongue, lip, and teeth resting postures, and improve functional chewing and swallowing.

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) works for all ages.

Let's Talk About Myo Therapy

Muscles are made to work together and the muscles of the face and mouth are no different. We first assess for any myofunctional dysfunction so we can then help both children and adults use their mouths properly and have the muscles work together in a collaborative effort.

Success with myofunctional therapy results with CONSISTENT and DAILY exercises to repattern the neural pathways of the mouth, tongue and face muscles. Therapy consists of an individualized program of exercises that requires a commitment by the patient and the patient’s family. Treatment can vary in length from 4 to 12 months depending on individual needs. A fun bag of “tools” will be provided as we start therapy together.
